Agile Systems
Architectural and Engineering Fundamentals

An Introductory 2-Day Course

COURSE DESCRIPTION and OBJECTIVES

Systems today must show new agile capabilities for effective response in the face of continual change. Enterprise thrives only while it mirrors the environment it serves. Products lead only while they fit new demands better than others. Process serves only while it delivers new performance as needed. Integration works only while it meets new expectations

Agile systems provide effective response in the face of uncertainty and unpredictability. Real cases of agile systems are analyzed for their response proficiency and response ability. Response capability frameworks are applied in analysis and requirements development. Agility-enabling architectures and principles are illuminated and then applied in analysis and synthesis exercises. Effective response is measured in time, cost, quality, and scope of response. Hands-on, minds-on exercises prepare and guide the participants in applying the knowledge. The intent is to develop facility with architectural and engineering concept development; and familiarity with performance objectives and tools for requirements development and design synthesis of agile systems

COURSE ORGANIZATION

This course is organized into eight 3.5 hour units, delivered over two days, typically 8:00am to 5:00pm. The course combines lectures, readings, real-life case studies, analysis exercises, and design exercises to develop an understanding of the concepts, principles, and performance metrics of agile systems. A team project allows participants to integrate and apply their knowledge in a collaborative effort. A reference reading list is provided for continued self-study.

COURSE AUDIENCE

This course serves as an essential introduction to agile system concepts for engineers, architects, analysts, strategists, designers, project managers, program managers, and business managers.

PROJECTS and CASES

Agile systems run the range from products and processes to information and infrastructure to enterprises and systems-of-systems. Class projects and case studies can be tailored and selected to coincide with participant interests and work-related assignments. Projects will be accomplished in collaborative teams, and peer reviewed in group presentation.

INSTRUCTOR – This course is presented by Rick Dove, Industry Professor at Stevens Institute of Technology in the School of Systems and Enterprises, where he is co-director of the four-course graduate certificate in Agile Systems and Enterprises. Representing industry, he was the co-principle Investigator of the study that founded the concept of agile enterprise at Lehigh University, and Director of Strategy and Research subsequently at the Agility Forum. He is author of Response Ability: The Language Structure, and Culture of the Agile Enterprise. He has over 35 years experience in start-up, turn-around, and interim executive management in virtually all C-level position; and has a technical background in computer and manufacturing systems.
